I also have dreadlocks. I started them (with lots of help from my beloved family) on December 18, 2012 and they've been going strong ever since. A lot of people ask me why I got dreads. I got them soon after I returned from a two week intensive outpatient program in Colorado. Prior to my trip, I had attempted suicide twice, tried almost every antidepressant on the market, and gone to 4 or 5 different counselors for years, but could not find relief from my symptoms. I was exhausted and at the end of my rope. During my time in Colorado, I found renewed strength in Christ and so much healing through the power of forgiveness. When I returned, my friends and family told me that they were excited to have the old Heather back and I felt that way too. I wanted to mark the change in my own heart with an external change as well. I considered getting a tattoo or a haircut and dying my hair. Then, while looking on Pinterest, I found a picture of a woman rock climbing. She had the most beautiful blonde dreads of anyone I had ever seen.
It seemed like the perfect thing for me to do. So, I got dreadlocks and the rest is history :)
I am also a college student, but I'm taking time off from school right now to continue on my path to healing and also to work and save up enough money to rent a place in Minneapolis with my beloved pup and my six goldfish in their massive 55 gallon tank! I am at a Christian university majoring in Biblical and Theological Studies with a minor in Studio Art. I hope to someday become a youth pastor or work with youth in some capacity. I have a heart for middle school and high school students and really enjoy hearing their stories and being a positive influence on their lives. I know that God is going to use my pain and my journey to help them make it through their own struggles someday and I can't wait to be part of furthering God's Kingdom in that way.
I hope you enjoy reading my blog. May you find strength and encouragement in reading about my story and may it guide you in dealing your own mental illness or in helping someone you know who is struggling.
